17 March 09, Irish Training
Toyonaka Dojo, 7-9pm
Individual Practice
Hokei
- katsumei – no excess effort
- chisei – walk through a few times then practiced each section with emphasis on shifting the center front and back with each defense/counter pair.
- nentai – a couple of runs through with some work on tightening my shoulder position on the first section arm movements.
- nenin – twice through to balance my nentai practice.
Unshin
- work on bakuchu – I took some video to see why my bakuchu isn’t as smooth as I would like. It looks like the problem is with my tuck – it’s too slow. I could always use more jump, but bakuchu is about technique, and mine has gone downhill over the past few months.

Moving Practice
All movements practiced around the circumference of the court. I wasn’t able to sequence the movements well because everyone kept asking me to do more every time I would give them a short break. I guess that means it was fun, but they’ll all be sore tomorrow…
- light jog
- jog with spins in both directions
- hopping left to right
- hops with 360 spin
- hops with 720 spin
- chudan kamae moving forward and backward
- swinging leg stretches
- maegeri ido
- slow senin nukite
- zenten
- lying to slow koten
- standing to plank position walk-outs
- gedan kamae ido
- maegeri ido from gedan kamae
Basics
After the moving practice, we broke up, and I worked with our newest student on the leg movements for so, in, ka, and gen.
Hokei
For the remainder of the practice, everyone worked individually on hokei.
Jissen
A few rounds of slow sotai. A couple of us realized that we aren’t using unsoku angles to our advantage nearly as well as we should.
I Want Me Lucky Charms
After all that, I went home and toasted St. Patrick with a pint of Guinness and some awesome bangers.
